Vietnam Weather Overview

Vietnam has a diverse climate due to its long, narrow geography stretching over 1,600 km from north to south. This means the weather can vary significantly between regions at the same time of year.

Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa)

  • Winter (Nov–Feb): Cool and dry, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C. Sapa can get chilly, sometimes with frost.
  • Spring (Mar–Apr): Pleasant and mild, ideal for outdoor activities.
  • Summer (May–Aug): Hot and humid, with temperatures often over 30°C and occasional heavy rains or typhoons.
  • Autumn (Sep–Oct): Clear skies and cooler temperatures make this one of the best times to visit.

Central Vietnam (Hue, Danang, Hoi An)

  • Dry Season (Feb–Aug): Warm and sunny, especially from April to August, with highs reaching 35°C.
  • Rainy Season (Sep–Jan): Frequent rain and storms, especially in October and November, sometimes causing floods.

Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc)

  • Dry Season (Dec–Apr): Hot and dry, with daytime temperatures around 28–35°C.
  • Rainy Season (May–Nov): Tropical rains mostly in the afternoon; lush landscapes and fewer tourists.
